Scarlett Hill, STAG Productions: Writer, Director, Producer.

Scarlett Hill of STAG Productions offered “Speed Date!” to the LGBTQI networking and films evening run by the International Moving Image Society (IMIS) held at Zero One, Soho London on the 10th July 2018.

The IMIS provides essential assistance, help and promotion to rising and emerging film makers to try out their films in front of a sympathetic audience of like-minded talented filmmakers, from all parts of the industry, and to offer networking opportunities to all involved.

Scarlett Hill brought her five minute comedy short “Speed Date!” a film with comic presentation but a deadly serious intent!

We open by finding Mia at home, in her flat, on her bed and alone and crying to old romantic music. Big teddy in the corner, posters on the wall, romantic reminder that “When I fall in love it will be forever”….this is not what Mia wants. But what to do about it? Mia goes on line but derides the possibility of speed dating. Yet, out of desperation what does she do but go speed dating.

The experience is every bit as testing as Mia could have imagined! We are introduced to a crowd of rapidly changing charactertures, chancers, personalities and no hopers. Surely amongst this motley crew there is one chance? One opportunity for the love Mia is seeking? Well maybe there is…Is there? Take a look below and find out!

In just five minutes Scarlett Hill gives us a hope born of necessity, a series of encounters and an adventure in reality. The commentary is, of course, that these types of romantic hopes mean that a load of very individual people have to be met before the possibility of a meaningful relationship might emerge!

This is a well put together and perfectly balanced film short, one telling a full story in just five minutes. Scarlett Hill has done well with her production approach to a subject that could so easily have descended into unbelievable farce. The film avoids that fate by succeeding in making a serious commentary in a comic way and ending in a predictable and understandable way. Awful characters! Great director! Great future!
