I first came across this award winning playwright turned filmmaker at the IMIS, LGBTQI evening, in London, on the 10th July 2018. Deborah was showing  “The World Can Wait”.  The film is certainly tongue in cheek, but one with a deadly serious message. Deborah Espect turns the spotlight on the tendency of media and television executives to tire of lesbian/gay/bisexual characters and to kill them off before they can stand the test the time of time. “The World Can Wait” takes a look at such a character (superbly underplayed by Veronica Jean Trickett)  and in an intriguing 8 minute short film offers an original, unlikely but appropriate parody of a solution to the situation as viewers take matters into their own hands to influence the outcome! View the film at www.youtube.com/moggy productions. The World Can Wait has won the Audience Award at ClexaCon in Las Vegas, in April 2018, was awarded Film of the Month title at the Direct Online Short Film Festival and has, since its release in February 2018, been selected or 15 International Festivals, including three in New York. YouTube viewings now top 38,000. So far the film has also been selected for festivals in New York, Middle Tennessee, Oklahoma and South Korea. Such support for the underlying message demonstrates that Deborah Espect has hit a sympathetic theme with a commentary that reflects the experience of many in the LGBT.

In addition to The World Can Wait, Deborah has also produced a four and a half minute music video for London based band Useless Cities. Shot entirely in and around her home City of Brighton the video makes outstanding use of short take views into the creation and disintegration of relationships. The sensitivity and everyday nature of how Deborah approaches this, with such a light touch, perfectly compliments the excellent writing and instrumentation from Useless Cities. The film, again, perfectly demonstrates the ability of the independent sector, in filmmaking, to take on ideas and themes for discussion that would not be possible outside the sector. As such filmmakers such as Deborah Espect play an important part in social commentary as well as showing flashes of true originality and genius in their artistry.

Bringing us up to date Deborah Espect is hosting a new Brighton Based TV show on Latest TV herself supporting short films, documentaries and animations made by, or about members of the LGBTQ+ community. Over the next 7 weeks over 30 short pieces will be presented:

Latest TV Sneak Peeks: Shorts Out and proud

Deborah says of it:

“There is still a lack of positive representation of LGBTQ+ characters on TV, especially when it comes to women, cis and transgender. With “Shorts Out!”, my aim is to showcase the talent of independent filmmakers and offer our LGTBQ+ community, and everyone else, the chance to watch some fantastic shorts.”

We will continue to follow the expanding career of this talented and extraordinary filmmaker from this Blog.
