IMIS LGBTQI Evening 10 July 2018

I was privileged to be present on this evening and to see the work of a number of filmmakers, writers and producers. That the International Moving Image Society (IMIS) should choose to focus on filmmakers who are emerging from the LGBTQI community is to be applauded. The evening while only scratching the surface of the potential that rests within this community offered an insight into the kind of work that is already taking place.

Joshua Hext: “Quietus”. Deborah Espect: “The World Can Wait”. Scarlett Hill: “Speed Date”. Henry Yeoh “Separate Tongues”. Elliott Kershaw: “Starman From Heaven”. and George Wilson: “Made to be Men”.

All offered insights into the art of independent filmmaking within this community. Over the next few weeks I will feature a number of postings based on the actual filmmaker as much as the film that was shown at this particular evening event. This will allow the opportunity to show the variety and depth of talent that is emerging from the LGBTQI community and how the Community is uniquely placed to comment on aspects of their experiences that would not otherwise receive focus. It is yet another example of how the independent side of the film industry can offer both constructive social commentary and entertaining films from a low budget and small scale production base and still achieve the potential for World class recognition.
